All about me

It was amazing to Scout how many of my friends and family had never heard of a Bernese Mountain Dog before. Scout would like to share some information about her breed!

Origins: Exact origins are unclear but it's believed that the Bernese Mountain Dog began as a working / farm dog in Switzerland. A similiar dog has been shown in paintings of the 18th century. They were watchdogs for the farmer and their large frame made it ideal for them to pull carts.

Coloring: Tri-colored with a black coat, and white and rust markings.

Size: Females will get between 70-90 lbs, males will get between 80-115 lbs.

Temperament: Self confident, alert and good natured. They are affectionate and good with children though they may be aloof to the attention of strangers. They are intelligent and anxious to please which makes them easier to train. They are also good with other dogs and cats. They love to be with their owners and don't do well being by themselves for long periods of time.

Abilities: They are a very versatile and can make great therapy dogs, herding, and search and rescue dogs. They also can compete in obedience, tracking and/or carting. (Since they were bred for draft work, they are a natural for pulling carts.)

Lifespan: Recently it's been 6-8 years due to a high incidence of cancer in the breed. (Hopefully this improves with research and better breeding practices.)

For more information, please visit the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America.

P.S. Scout comes home 3 days!!

You're right, most people have never heard of this great breed. Its amazing though, over the past year I have seen Berners in advertisements all over the place..including the very large one in the Bissell (I think its Bissell) vacuum commercial. I hope you have a good vacuum, you're going to need it!

I LOVE their markings! The first time I'd ever seen one was in the movie "Good Boy" (talking dogs and all!) and have wanted one ever since. I understand they're quite protective.
