Scout's first day at home!

Scout wanted to show you what her first day was like with her new family!

She really enjoyed playing in the yard and seeing how many woodchips she could put in her mouth before her mommy could catch her to pull them out!

Scout met Marvin the cat and tried to show him who was boss. Marvin had other ideas and gave Scout a friendly swap on the nose and said "pipe down youngster!"

Here is Scout giving her mommy and daddy the loving eyes!

And then there were puppy naps!

And more puppy naps!

All about me

It was amazing to Scout how many of my friends and family had never heard of a Bernese Mountain Dog before. Scout would like to share some information about her breed!

Origins: Exact origins are unclear but it's believed that the Bernese Mountain Dog began as a working / farm dog in Switzerland. A similiar dog has been shown in paintings of the 18th century. They were watchdogs for the farmer and their large frame made it ideal for them to pull carts.

Coloring: Tri-colored with a black coat, and white and rust markings.

Size: Females will get between 70-90 lbs, males will get between 80-115 lbs.

Temperament: Self confident, alert and good natured. They are affectionate and good with children though they may be aloof to the attention of strangers. They are intelligent and anxious to please which makes them easier to train. They are also good with other dogs and cats. They love to be with their owners and don't do well being by themselves for long periods of time.

Abilities: They are a very versatile and can make great therapy dogs, herding, and search and rescue dogs. They also can compete in obedience, tracking and/or carting. (Since they were bred for draft work, they are a natural for pulling carts.)

Lifespan: Recently it's been 6-8 years due to a high incidence of cancer in the breed. (Hopefully this improves with research and better breeding practices.)

For more information, please visit the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of America.

P.S. Scout comes home 3 days!!

Just Playing

My mommy wanted me to tell you that I weigh 7 lbs right now! My sisters and brothers are a lot bigger at 8 and 9 lbs. I'll be 8 weeks old on June 27th and be able to go home with my mommy and daddy. (And apparently a new brother - Marvin the cat.) Right now I like to nibble on fingers and jump like a rabbit! I think I'll have some new toys to chew on soon!

Our new puppy Scout!

I've waited a long time for this Bernese baby! After a year on the waiting list, Scout will be coming home on June 27th. She is named after a character in one of my favorite books - "To Kill A Mocking Bird." She is the runt of the litter (which I know doesn't really mean anything) and is the sweetest girl ever!
